What is Viagra?

Viagra, is a drug from Pfizer for use in the treatment of male impotency. It is the first oral treatment for male impotence filed with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and the European Medicines Evaluation Agency. It was approved by the FDA, 3/27/98.

How does Viagra work?

Viagra is taken orally and is a known as a phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. By inhibiting the PDE5 enzyme, which is found mainly in the penis, Viagra allows the chemical produced during sexual stimulation, cyclic GMP, to persist. The longer cyclic GMP persists, the better chance for increased blood flow and thereby, an erection.

What is Viagra's success rate?

According to reports released in May, 1996 the success rate of Viagra was between 65% to 88% compared to 39% for those subjects receiving a placebo. According to an AP article released 10/27/97, Viagra achieved a success rate of 80%, (no placebo results were published).
